Educational visit to Guru Ram Rai Gurdwara, famously known as Jhandaji Gurdwara
The students of Dev Bhoomi School of Architecture, one of the top architecture colleges in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, were taken for an educational visit to Guru Ram Rai Gurdwara, famously known as Jhandaji Gurdwara, near Saharanpur Chowk, on 7th September, 2018.
The Gurdwara, which is believed to be the origin of the city of Dehradun, is a marvelous architectural example symbolizing strength and respect. It is in adulation for the banished Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Rai that King Aurangzeb got this temple built, and thus began a new sect. Ever since its establishment in the year 1707, every year on the fifth day from Holi is considered as Guru Ram Rai’s birthday and marks the beginning of the Jhandaji Fair. The occasion sees the presence of devotees from different parts of the country arriving in masses and paying their tribute to the Guru.
Speaking of Architecture, the students of Bachelor of Architecture could see a visible blend of Indian and Mughal architecture. From the arches to the paintings on walls, all speak of the revolution in the Indian architecture with the advent of the Mughals in India. The symmetry in design and presence of water bodies and symmetrical gardens are some typical Mughal building typologies. On the other hand, the jharokas, jalis and Indian arches brought in the touch of Indian architecture.
The sole purpose of taking the students of Bachelor of Architecture to this historic place was to revisit the past and learn the principles of design applicable in the building. It shows the transition in materials being used for construction. The students indulged in live sketching taking in the small details of their surroundings. They were highly intrigued by the minute details and the planning typology of the main building and the surrounding buildings.
It is from the past that the man learns to live in the present and create a brighter future. With the same intent, the students of Dev Bhoomi School of Architecture, one of the best architecture colleges in Uttarakhand were taken to this epitome of culture where they could come face to face with marvels of the historic Dehradun.
